Dear Friends and Community, My heart is full of hope that each and every one of you is taking care, of yourself, of your loved ones, and the community that surrounds you. Yes, we live in unprecedented times. Interesting, unimaginable, and at times seemingly wicked and downright depressing. Caring for one another, this beautiful planet, our home, and for everything we find important and near to our heart seems of the utmost importance now more than ever. My mom, Linda, Sue Boecker, has tumbled at light speed into a very difficult, painful and heart-wrenching process in the past two months. She has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer after a hospitalization of 19 days at Kaiser Permanente. Not having any previous notable signs this metastasized cancer has sneakily spread throughout the body, with one major, inoperable mass blocking kidney function (requiring nephrostomy tubes to keep kidneys functioning). In addition to this, and the way we found out about the cancer, is that she fell and broke her dominant right upper arm (humerus) where a cancer disintegrated the bone so it snapped when she fell. The amount of pain she has gone through in the past two months has been extraordinary. And heart breaking. In just two months Sue has gone from living independently to requiring 24 hour care, dealing with unbelievable pain, and coping with a diagnosis that leaves very few options for treatment. In 1997, when I was 10 she was diagnosed with the largest (22cm) breast cancer involving all right side lymph nodes, that the City of Hope, cancer resource center in Southern California, had ever seen. At that point in time they had little hope of her surviving, but mom wouldn't accept this and fought back. She has always said that she went through those tortuous treatments for me… demonstrating that one can survive insurmountable odds...and I too should know that I can do anything. For this I will be eternally grateful, she has gifted me with a strength that will remain one of my cornerstones of life. Over the years Sue has taken on chemotherapy, radiation, numerous surgeries and subsequent, multiple, recurring cancers due to the initial cancer therapies. In recent years she has been subject to chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy which has inhibited her movement and life due to pain. Sue is incredible, in so many ways, and for those who know her- they know of her very unique personality and character. She demands an unwavering stand against injustice, determination to save the wild spaces, to ensure the clean up environmental disasters and hold those responsible accountable for their actions; she will persist and persevere in the face of the greatest of odds and adversaries, and will never forget to remind me that good friends are few and far between but with a small group the unimaginable can be accomplished. Mom will always hold near to her heart friendship and love as core values of living this life. Her example of passion, courage and resilience has inspired my life, and that of countless others. As her daughter I am sending out a prayer and call to community to help me financially care for her. My partner Nolan and I are full time farmers, and don't have enough hours in the day or financial resources to take on full time care of mom as we have been doing for the past month since shes been out of the hospital. Any help, anything at all, would be greatly appreciated. One hour of in home care is $25-$30 per hour. No donation is too small. All funds donated are going to medical bills and continuing costs, in home health care support, and for transportation costs. With love, gratitude and a wish for resilience and peace, Ali Boecker All payments can either be made via Venmo to me (Ali-Boecker).
