April, 2016.  It is at this time that we were expecting to celebrate Lucia’s one year anniversary of the last treatment to put the non-Hodgkin’s, B Cell Lymphoma that came quietly into her life in 2013-2014, into remission, but that is not the case. Unfortunately it has roared its ugly head back into her life with a vengeance.  I’m saddened to inform you that our friend, sister and family member will have to undergo another battle with this (while common) extremely complex form of lymphoma,  which is heavily complicated by her past two histories with chemotherapy treatments.  

Lucy is under the care of a NYC doctor who specializes in Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma out of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NYC.  As the information stands now it is our hope she will begin a 2-day chemotherapy (monthly for the next 3 months) within the next 1-2 weeks.  Lucy will be required to be in the hospital for the treatments to be administered.   Her doctors are exploring  the possibility of enrolling her in a clinical trial that may be available to her as well to help her fight this disease.   

To know Lucy, is to love Lucy.  Lucy is the one who is always doing something for others. She will be the first to volunteer to help a friend (or a stranger) and she’ll do it with a smile on her face. If you mention to Lucy you have a sore throat the next day you will have a baggie on your door with her favorite cough medicine and likely some food (she can’t help the food part that’s the Italian in her!!). 

 I have walked 100s of volunteer miles with her in the heat, cold and rain (and mud) with her with our aches and pains to raise money for others.  Lucy, while undergoing her own treatment last year, kept my  Mom in good company while I underwent surgery, came stocked with water, snacks and plenty of laughs to share with my Mom. She didn’t leave until I was in recovery and then she finally went home to rest—because that’s Lucy.  She will always be by your side and put you first.   

I know everyone will have stories like this about Lucy because that is just what she does.  Lucy will never ask for help, however the reality of medical deductibles and other needs this year during her illness will be extensive.
Please join me in cherishing her, embracing her with our love and in the least taking away some of her financial worries in the upcoming year as she fights cancer (again).
