Karma - Do good for others and it will come back to you in unexpected ways
I and my husband are Canadian residents who came to Toronto 2 years back to start a new life. Canada has been nothing but kind, generous and open hearted to us always. And that is exactly what I request you to be today as my 28 year old brother fights with a rare form of life threatening blood cancer - Acute Myeloid Myeloma (Leukemia) back home in India.
Doctors say its a miracle and testimony of his fighting spirit that he made it this far but to get him back on his feet, he will need a lot more, and it has to be done now.
As you may know, life for immigrants can be full of debt and struggle to begin with and we are no different. To help my family, I had to leave my job in Canada and go back to India. We are going to fight this as much as we can and with your support and contributions, this young man will have his life back!
I'm sure you want to get to know my brother a bit more before deciding, below is a summary of his short life:
Prateek is a spirited and hard-working young man with a Hotel Management and an MBA degree from top schools in India. He is a wonderful son, brother and friend. He was to get married next month but now that is off too. Even though he may not get married, we hope to keep him alive. His confidence is still high and he cannot wait to start working again so that he can support his loving parents and be with his family.
Now that you know Prateek, below is what has happened in his treatment so far and how much we have struggled:
As he was undergoing his treatment for Leukemia at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, New Delhi he was also diagnosed with Covid19 and was admitted in complete Isolation for over 20 days. Unfortunately, even my mother was exposed to Covid and had also tested positive. To add to our misery, my father also suffered a Heart Stroke recently and had to undergo a surgery for the same, making the overall situation even more challenging for me and my family. All of this has taken an emotional toll on my brother and the rest of the family. But we are a family of believers, and even though we sometimes can’t see Prateek or hold his hand to comfort him, we know that he is aware of all our prayers and efforts.
NEXT STEPS IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS:
Prateek’s Treatment process requires Chemotherapy followed by Bone Marrow Transplant. Unfortunately the 1st Round of Chemotherapy has failed and his cancer cells have resurfaced. Just a couple of days ago he was also diagnosed with Mucositis because of which he cannot orally intake any food or liquids. He weighs only 45kgs as of today. Now there is another Chemotherapy scheduled with stronger drugs that cost much much more. There is a parallel process wherein Prateek has to be infused with Platelets (required 2-3 times per week), and regular units of WBC as his body is unable to make blood on its own.
The estimated time for the surgery and post- surgery hospitalization is total approx 3-4 months. The estimated cost of the entire treatment including post-hospitalization care and follow-up is approx INR 70,00,000 to INR80,00,000 (approx CAD $1,33,036/USD $1,00,000) and my family is in no position to
bear this cost.
My mother is a house wife. My father is 66 yrs old and retired. He has already exhausted all his life savings to make his son get the best treatment. Our family and friends have also come forward to support us in whatever way they can and yet financially we are nowhere near the amount required.
Each day in the hospital is adding more and more amount to the bill for his Medicines, WBC infusion, Platelets infusion , 2nd round of Chemo and other hospital expenses. Right now my family really needs your support to help through this terrible time.
We urge you to come forward and help my brother and family who are desperately in need of your support by making a donation. Even if it is a small amount, it will go a long way. Whether you do or do not donate, please share this story with your network (on your social media, e-mail, a call, or text). We really
really need your help. We appreciate each and every contribution from your end and thank you in advance for your kind contribution to support our cause.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you to all of you who will be donating. We cannot thank you enough
God bless you all
