SWEETIE NEEDS YOUR HELP JUST ONCE MORE:
As you kind people know, little Sweetie received her implant on Thursday, August 18. At her 2-week examination on Wed., August 31, she was doing wonderfully. Sweetie’s stitches on her SPL came loose, and the tube began to leak, so on Tues., Sept. 6, I took her to my local vet to have her eye checked, the tube shortened to eliminate the leak and the stitches replaced. Her eye again was fine and the vets and I were all jubilant.
Then on Thurs. night I noticed a slight cloud in the center of her eye. I rushed her to U.Ga. on Friday and the vets informed me that she had developed a cataract and there was nothing more they could do. Sweetie is now blind. This type of thing can happen and, unfortunately, it did. Due to her hyperactive immune system, Sweetie is not a candidate for cataract surgery.
All of you donated almost $3,800 for her eye, and I spent another $3,000 of my own money. Sadly, dear Sweetie is now blind. She is still kind and calm, even in the face of her blindness. I have been weeping for days, but Miss Sweetie just gets on with her life, calmly dealing with her handicap. I have removed her feed trough so she won’t bump into it and padded the doorway of her stall so she won’t bump her head when she looks out. I have a collar with a bell on it for Miss Ellie, her companion horse, but there is still more we can do.
SWEETIE NEEDS YOUR HELP ONE MORE TIME: There is a company called “Jordy Canid, Inc.” that makes a echolocation devices for dogs and horses. Go to www.jordycanid.com and see the videos of horses wearing this device and “seeing”. It is remarkable! I called the company today, and they will sell me the device for $340 instead of $680 since Sweetie is a rescued horse. I need to raise this money ASAP in order to get her used to it as she gets used to not being able to see. Please consider donating one more time so Sweetie can “see” again and won’t run into the fence or other objects in her paddock.
Horses with this device can navigate to their feed bowls, around obstacles on the ground and other remarkable things. See the videos on the site! Please take heart and know that we have all done the best we can for her, and let’s do this one last thing which can’t be taken away from her. PLEASE DONATE – LET’S DO THIS!!!
Sincerely,
Brooks Hunnicutt
