Two days later his leg had swollen to over twice its size, causing pitting edema in his leg. Which prompted another vet visit and blood tests. The blood tests and toxin tests, both came back normal. Over the holiday weekend his leg started to rupture in multiple spots. He stopped eating, and couldn’t even lift his head on his own.
This prompted his most recent vet visit to a specialist since our primary vet was stumped. The new vet was immediately concerned and a little dumbfounded as to what was going on. He went to inspect the leg and a large patch of skin sloughed off. Surprising us all.
Badger then went to get an ultra sound and during that, the skin split open to reveal a puss filled infection. The doctor cut badger open and flushed out his leg and as much as the infection as possible. Every one of the doctors came in to see what was going on because it is still such a mystery to why this got so infected or damaged in the first place.
Badger is on three types of antibiotics now and is staying in the hospital as much as needed. The doctor said loosing the leg is an "extreme possibly" but we are hoping he can beat the infection and still have full range mobility.
We rescued Badger from a high kill shelter in New Mexico 2 years ago after he was left to starve tied to the bumper of a car. He is the sweetest dog and has always had our hearts.
This is only the beginning of what is happening to our sweet Badger and will be a long road to recovery. We are grateful that we are hopefully going to be able to save his life, but the ongoing and future costs are greater than anticipated. Any donation you are able to make is sincerely appreciated.
Any money received exceeding the amount required to care for Badger will be donated to another dog in need.
