My wife and I recently rescued little Lemmy from Thailand, roughly 3 weeks ago. He was a shy, nervous little guy but we figured after all the stress of the flights, vehicle travel etc. this was to be expected, but as the days went on and Lemmy continued to lose weight we became worried. The first vet visit was a quick check and we changed his diet as well as began giving him some basic antibiotics this seemed to help for awhile.
Unfortunately yesterday he couldnt carry on, he passed out yesterday evening while trying to get to the water dish, and then after a few moments stood and promptly passed out again. We rushed him to the closest 24hr vet were they immediatly put him on intravenous and antibiotics for a total of 7 hours. At this point the vet decided it was not enough and called to say if we did not immediatly do a blood transfusion Lemmy would likely not survive the day, so we made the choice to go ahead with this. We were told his platelet level was alarmingly low (too low) and his red blood cell level was at about 18% compared to the 30%-60% which is ideal. The transfusion was successful but they still do not know if he is anemic or if it is sourced from a Tick borne parasistic blood disease , or a third parasitic disease that is not well known to them but may have come with him from Thailand. He is getting continual blood work at this point as well as I.V. and antibiotics. He will not be able to return home today, and possibly not tomorrow pending the lab results. The Vetrinarian has quoted us at this point for $3,000.00 CAD however this can change as his stay is prolonged. Any contributions will help immensely to bring Lemmy back home and give him another chance not only off the streets of Thailand but to live in Canada with us now!
