Last week Shneur Swedlow (17) and Christian Junkar (19) were summiting Dragontail Peak in the Stuart Range. During a technical part of the climb, Christian's bag plummeted off the rock wall along with all their food, water, stove and Christian's hiking boots. They continued the climb and took shelter for the night under an emergency blanket in a hollowed out part of the assent. They spent the night freezing, starving and thirsty, getting soaked by sleet and rain. The next morning, hypothermic and dehydrated, they continued the assent to the summit because repelling down would have been too dangerous.
They summitted and then began the long hike down the other side, Christian wearing only wet climbing shoes. By the time they arrived at Colchuck Lake, it was nearly 11pm on Thursday, more than 24 hours after their planned arrival back at camp.
Thanks to the swift and fearless work of the Chelan County Search and Rescue team, the boys were fed, hydrated and warmed. The next day their feet had swollen with frostbite and they had to be airlifted to the hospital in Leavenworth WA. They would not have been able to walk any further.
If not for the Chelan County Search and Rescue team, our boys may not be with us any more. We are forever grateful.
Please consider making a donation to support the Chelan County Search and Rescue volunteers. Let's buy them some new equipment and gear. Let's at least reimburse them for the lifesaving sandwhiches that revived Shneur and Christain.
