Keep Abba (Nissan) Comfortable
Donation protected
For those of you who know me and my family, you know how much we love my father, Nissan. We affectionately call him Abba (father in Hebrew). Abba has been there for us and for his friends and community (and strangers, too), no matter what. My parents have worked very hard for a long time. They have been married for almost 42 years. Now is our time to be there for them.
At the end of April, Nissan was admitted to Kaiser Hospital in Woodland Hills with shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with heart failure, and soon faced a reality that he would not get better any time soon.
Abba was in the hospital for about a month while he had emergency surgery and endured multiple difficult diagnostic tests. Other serious diagnoses came, and the amazing doctors, nurses, physical therapists and staff at Kaiser worked to get him better, and get him home.
Unfortunately, there is not any more that can be done for Abba that is not invasive, very risky, and very uncomfortable. So he made a very personal decision to come home and be under hospice care. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing, and in most cases this end-of-life care is provided in the patient's home.
We're not sure what the future will bring, but we want Abba to have a comfortable, loving experience while he's with us.
This includes employing a skilled caregiver who comes to the house everyday to spend time with Abba, make sure he has everything he needs, including medication, can get out of the hospital bed and into his wheelchair to sit with visitors, keep him feeling as good as possible. Also important, this helps my mom and brother take care of important business. It also allows my mom to do a few things for herself from time to time.
I'll be in LA soon to spend more time with my Abba, but in the meantime, any donations or sharing of this page are greatly appreciated. Donations will go to my mom, Flora Kohl, to use toward caregivers and supplies, the cost of which are quickly adding up. Though Abba's time is limited, we hope he is with us for a while longer.
My family is forever greatful for our family and friends who have given so much every day, of their time, company, food, help, and love so far. You are our rock; you make the days we have with Nissan sweet.
