Jason , Andrew, callum and jamie  will be climbing mount Snowden in August to raise money to help fund 2 alternative treatments that are not available on the NHS, Bruno our 10-month old nephew has severe Microcephaly, this is a medical condition in which the brain does not develop properly resulting in a much smaller head size than another child of the same age. There is no specific treatment that returns the head size to normal and in general life expectancy for children with microcephaly is reduced and the prognosis for full brain function is poor. Microcephaly is only one of Bruno’s symptoms, we are still waiting on a full diagnosis. Maz and Christine Bruno’s parents only learnt Bruno had Microcephaly 6 weeks ago when they took him to see a paediatrician about concerns of his head control. This news has absolutely broken their hearts, after desperately searching the internet and only seeing negative stories about children with the same symptoms as Bruno they came across the hyperbaric oxygen therapy clinic in California. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment which enhances the body’s natural healing process of inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments including neurological problems. Christine and Maz have contacted the clinic and spoke to a specialist who has treated other children with (HBOT) and have seen increases of up to 2 inches in head circumference, which is a massive growth in comparison to Bruno’s current head growth. The specialist recommended them to a clinic in the UK that also treat children with the scotson technique. Linda Scotson has recognised that children with neurological problems are likely to have abnormal breathing, the results of both of these treatments have been life changing for many disabled children. Maz and Christine know the plans they had for Bruno have changed and at the moment are unsure if he will ever, walk, talk or even sit but early intervention with these two treatments will improve his quality of life and his development potential.
