Please help us bring our rescue dog, Madu, home!

This is an appeal to all the kind hearts out there who may be able to help us bring Madu home.

We found an injured puppy in a pool of blood on the side of the road in Bali, Indonesia and rushed her straight to the vet for treatment. We have been giving her love and bringing her back to health ever since but now we have all grown attached to each other and we’re desperately trying to raise funds to transport her back to Jersey in the Channel Islands.

If you have a moment to spare, here's the story in more detail...

While on holiday in Bali, we were riding on our moped through a province called Suwat in the centre of the island. It was mainly farms and woodland with very few houses around. As we turned a corner I noticed what I thought was a rabbit with myxomatosis on the side of the road. As we got closer we realised it was a small helpless puppy that was injured and covered in blood! In the middle of the road was a pool of blood and it was hard to think that so much had come from such a tiny animal.

The puppy was traumatised and screaming and crying the most heartbreaking sound. We tried to get close to pick her up but she was so terrified and confused that she stumbled and fell into a small trench on the side of the road. She yelped in pain and just lay there crying on her side, unable to move and helpless.

Without knowing what to do, we called across a rice terrace to some locals who kindly came over to help. The Balinese gentleman spoke little English but enough to say that he was sure she would die if we left her. At first, we tried to pick her up using a plastic bag but she was so scared that we couldn’t get anywhere near her without her trying to bite and cry. After a while, the man gestured to his wife across the field and she returned with a thick sack, usually used to carry vegetables or rice. In some ways, it was lucky that the puppy was inside the trench as we were able to guide her into the sack using a tree branch. The local couple tied up the sack with twine and helped us attach it to the hook on the front of the bike.

We looked on the map for the nearest vet and rode for 45 minutes to get her there. I kept looking into the sack to see if she was still breathing and at some point, I wasn’t even sure if we would make it or if the vet would just recommend to put her down when we arrived. I heard her cries as we stopped at traffic lights but we continued on and eventually found our way to Yuno Vet in Ubud.

The vet put her on the table instantly and took her out of the sack in a calm manner before investigating her injuries. As we had seen blood in the road we were almost certain someone had hit her in a car or moped but it turned out her head and neck contained puncture wounds most likely from a larger dog. Due to the fact, female dogs cost twice as much as male dogs to be sterilised it, unfortunately, means a lot of female puppies are left abandoned or worse in Bali. The likelihood is she was discarded by her owner who was unable to pay for the treatment. She was just over 3 months old and on top of the bite wound, she had a parasite under the skin called scabies, worms and was suffering from trauma. Her hair had almost all gone and she just looked incredibly sad and helpless. She was desperate.

We paid for her wound to be treated as well as rabies injections and other necessary medication and took her home to sleep and recover. In the morning we telephoned a number of Animal Welfare companies in Bali and they all came back with the same response - ‘We are really sorry but we are completely full and can no longer accept any more dogs.’

Unsure what to do we asked around and posted on forums and social media to try and find a loving owner but none came forward. So many other healthy dogs were looking for homes that our poor little pup stood no chance of being adopted.

We continued to show the puppy as much love and care as possible and bought her a comfortable blanket, treats and toys to play with. On the first night, she was still scared and she woke up twice yowling in the middle of the night from nightmares. She was very quiet and nervous on the first day and didn’t even have the strength to walk down the smallest stairs. She slept most of the time but we knew that would help her recovery.

A week passed - we were not able to find an owner and she is still frightened of lots of things but her health has improved dramatically. We called her ‘Madu’ which is Balinese for ‘honey’ which appeared to be the colour of her fur. After a week we started taking her for walks. Initially, she wasn’t too happy about having a collar and leash but by the second time she was much more used to it and slowly and surely we started taking her for longer walks as her health improved. Her hair started growing, she gained more confidence and eventually, she evolved into the most loving and caring dog we have even known.

Two weeks later and she’s been with us almost constantly. We’ve even taken her to the beach twice (which she would have seen for the first time in her life) and taken her to another part of Bali where we stayed together for two nights exploring the area.

It is now at the point where we think both her and ourselves would be heartbroken if we were ever separated.

We knew in our hearts that the only option was to start a GoFundMe page and whatever the outcome we can say we did our utmost to get Madu home and give her the life she deserves.

We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts and we are eternally grateful for showing us your kindness.

With much love

Magda and Chris
