Story: I am an 8th grade science teacher in Virginia and this is my science class! When the Coronavirus outbreak hit our state our world, like many others, was flipped upside down. I was selected by Fairfax County Public Schools to help with designing distance learning packets that would offer every middle school student hands on experiments and lessons that they could complete at home. While I was in the process of designing the first weeks packet, I sent out a google form to my students asking questions I wanted to know before our first virtual meeting. One optional question tugged at my heart strings. Out of my 144 students, 23% of my students said that a direct family member in their household had lost a job. I was shocked and as I write this I am sure that percentage is going up. I could not think about asking my students to complete these packets and continue learning when to me, helping these families was the priority. After discussing our options with the students, SOAP FOR HOPE was born. SOAP FOR HOPE is a way to utilize our chemistry skills to raise money for our students family impacted financially. Our goal is to raise money to help lift the financial burdens of our parents so real learning can occur. As a science class, we are hand making soap and writing personal letters thanking our donors. Your help is changing our LIVES!
