Konnor Scot Schafer born on October 09, 2020 at 8:30 pm. He was 7lbs 14 oz and 21 inches long. A happy healthy baby boy. The hospital told us they hear a heart murmur but it’s normal and will resolve itself as he grows. They discharged us saying his murmur was resolved. We go to the pediatrician 2 days later and he was concerned about the murmur that was supposedly resolved. He said it was unusually loud. He referred us to a cardiologist just to check to see what is going on. They did an echocardiogram and found everything. On October 27, 2020 (me and my husband first wedding anniversary) found out that our 2 week old son has to have open heart surgery. He has Tetralogy of Fallot and Dextrocardia (his heart is on his right side of his body and flipped) my Obgyn didn’t catch it on my 20 week anatomy scan, and at the hospital where he was born, wasn’t concerned about his murmur so they never checked it out. The Dr said he has a very unique heart and she’s never seen his complications all together before, only separate. We found out that our son has to have multiple surgeries. They want to wait as long as they can to do the surgery so they can figure out the best way to perform the surgery. Anywhere between the age of 6 months to 1 year old they will be doing it. The surgical team is going to consult with other surgeons around the country for different opinions on how to do the surgery. We get to meet with the team on December 14th so they can explain what they are going to be doing, how they are going to do it, how long recovery is, and how we have to take care of our son after surgery. The dr said if my son’s oxygen levels dip down in the 70% that they will have to do the surgery right away. Unfortunately I have to quit my job to be home with the baby to monitor his oxygen levels and make sure he doesn’t turn blue. This is extremely rough and stressful for all of us!
