I want to start by thanking everyone who reached out during Olympic Trials to cheer me along and offer some very kind words of encouragement. While I did not earn a spot at the final Olympic Qualification Regatta, that by no means meant an end to my rowing career or my summer. In fact, I've never felt more ready to get back to work and continue my training in Washington, D.C. as I look forward to Tokyo 2020.
The point of this fundraiser is to help me take the first steps in the 4-year journey ahead by competing internationally in the Diamond Challenge Sculls at the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England, June 28 - July 3.
In an Olympic year, there are few options for a open weight sculler to compete internationally, as all of the Olympic sculling events are removed from Non-Olympic World Championships program. The Diamond Challenge Sculls is a very competitive event accepting only 12 single scullers. Scullers who, like myself, may have missed out on an Olympic opportunity, but still have the talent and passion to compete at the highest level. The Henley course is 112 meters longer than the traditional 2,000 meter course and racing is done in a duel format. One on one, gladiator-style. An American has not won the event since 2005 and I am definitely looking to end that drought.
Funds raised will go directly toward expenses incurred abroad such as equipment rental (boat and oars), food, lodging and travel.
My success in rowing thus far is the sum of my family and friends' encouragement, faith in my potential and support. Racing at Henley will be my first opportunity to represent our country and The Potomac Boat Club overseas and I cannot make this a reality without your support.
Many of you already know my background, but here is a quick read on my past and how I got to where I am today.
