David Kline, an extraordinary man who spent his life in the service of truth, community, and family, lost a hard-fought battle with Stage 4 esophageal cancer on November 7. Those who love him, especially his wife Sarah, and his children, Daniel, Oliver and Charlotte , have been left staggering under the weight of this loss.
Compounding their emotional loss is the fact that David had always been the sole breadwinner and so now Sarah and the kids feel the added burden of upcoming college costs.
David and Sarah put down deep roots in Portland, and created a web of love and connection that stretched far beyond their immediate circle of friends and neighbors. David touched countless people with intelligence, compassion, quick wit, insight and generosity; he was well known to support anyone he could, often even strangers.
Those strong connections are apparent in the number of people who have reached out, asking how they can help the Klines. The most meaningful way for the community to honor David is to help his children realize their father’s fervent wish that they have the financial ability to pursue college, and, if they desire, post-graduate educations.
Oliver is a sophomore at George Washington University, with plans to attend law school, and Charlotte is a high school junior, just embarking on the college search process. In the last few years of his life, David put aside every penny possible for the kids’ college funds, but in the end, he simply ran out of time.
