David Doepel's Physical Therapy

Donation protected
Welcome to our CaringBridge & GoFundMe website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Sunday 11/8/2020 David fell headfirst out of bed and was rushed to North Memorial Hospital via ambulance.  All of his labs and x-rays were normal but he was a bit unsteady on his feet so they kept him overnight for observation.  After discharge home on Monday 11/9/20, he continued to be unsteady to the point of falling multiple times at home.  On Wednesday 11/11/20, Bonnie took David back to North Memorial and he was again admitted for observation, physical therapy (PT), and occupational therapy (OT).  Over the next few days in the hospital, he continued to become weaker and shakier, and on Friday 11/13/20 an MRI of his neck showed spinal cord compression and bruising so the neurologist recommended surgery.  Just before going into surgery on Saturday 11/14/20, they found a blood clot in both his leg and his lung.  Though surgery went well, he continued to become weaker and more confused, and battled fevers of unknown cause in the days that followed. His condition has fluctuated, with some days showing more progress in healing than others.

The injury to and subsequent surgery on his neck make significant physical and occupational therapy a necessary part of recovery. Due to the nature of the injury and how it's affecting David's mobility, this therapy is planned to take place in a transitional care unit (TCU), a short-term residential nursing facility. While physical therapy will be covered by David's health insurance, the costs of room and board at such a facility will not be covered. Right now we're anticipating at least a month-long stay at a TCU.

At the same time that our family is facing the costs of David's stay at a TCU, we are also working to make ends meet despite loss of income not only from David's work but from Bonnie's, as she has been spending every day at the hospital.

We know this is has been a hard year for a lot of people, and that money has been tight for many-- especially this close to the holidays. If you are able to contribute monetarily (in any amount), the support would be greatly appreciated. If you are not able to contribute monetarily, your continued well wishes and prayers would also be greatly appreciated.
