Walt Luberecki College Scholarship Fund

Walter Luberecki, the principal at Maine-Endwell High School dedicated his life to help students realize their potential. But he expected something back. He wanted those students to commit to something big and bold and beyond their small-town-forged aspirations.

Walt admired John F. Kennedy’s words about the importance of education: "Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource." So he challenged students to exercise that resource by working hard and playing hard, and to do so with integrity and honor.

After all, it was Walt who allowed us to paint the Spartan on the dividing cafeteria wall, cancelled all classes for students who wanted to clean up the school on Earth Day, opened up parking privileges to underclassmen who had jobs after school, agreed to and funded the Spartan Jazz Club, and coordinated the bus transportation to the undefeated girls’ basketball championship. That was just in one year!

It is in this spirt that the M-E Class of '79 creates the Walt Luberecki College Scholarship Fund.

This fund is open to anyone who knew Walt or someone like him that made a difference in a young life. Through our funding and in Walt’s name, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a college-bound student who humbly puts others before themself and acts with kindness and compassion toward all.
