Jacob Roberts Medical Expenses

On January 3, 2020, Jacob Roberts suffered multiple seizures while working on an oil rig in New Mexico. He was transported by ambulance to the emergency room in Carlsbad. A brain CT revealed a mass and multiple lesions in his brain. He was immediately Careflighted to University Hospital in Lubbock, TX, to the care of a neurosurgeon. A brain biopsy was performed and sent to Mayo Clinic. Their diagnosis was a rare autoimmune disorder called Primary CNS Vasculitis. There is no cure available. However, a treatment plan was developed to try to achieve remission. Jacob completed the treatments, but, unfortunately, they have not been successful. Jacob has suffered several more seizures and hospitalizations. He had another seizure on November 5 and suffered a skull fracture, orbital fracture, and mandible fracture as well as a large burn to his face when he fell during the seizure. He was transferred from SCR hospital in Laurel to UMMC in Jackson for intensive care. His MRI showed significant worsening of his disease which caused the seizure. A second open brain biopsy was performed November 10 and sent to Mayo to reconfirm their original diagnosis and to develop a new treatment plan. While awaiting biopsy results, Jacob suffered a large hemorrhage in his left frontal lobe on November 13 and became comatose. He was intubated at Merit Health Wesley Hospital and airlifted to UMMC in Jackson where he underwent a four-hour emergency surgery. His surgeons have stated that it is a miracle that he even survived. He is in ICU and has had to have a lumbar drain placed to relieve excess cerebrospinal fluid that is building up on his brain. He will need a VP shunt placed when he is medically stable. Jacob’s speech has been affected, and he has right-side paralysis. He has been unable to tolerate sitting up due to severe dizziness and headache. He has a long, difficult road ahead of him. He will need acute rehab for speech, balance, gait training, mobility, and strengthening. Preliminary biopsy results from Mayo Clinic confirmed the original diagnosis of Primary CNS Vasculitis, and he will be treated with aggressive chemotherapy when he is medically stable. Jacob is 22 years old, married, and has three small children - ages 4, 3, and 7 months. Any financial support would be greatly appreciated.
