I know many of you have expressed a desire to help those struggling to pay bills due to social isolation. A friend of mine called me today and asked me to bring him a few gallons of water. His water was shut off 3 weeks ago because he hasnt been able to pay his bill since March. He now owes $1100 to the water company and they are requiring the amount in full plus fees to turn his water on. He is 66 and doesnt get enough SSI to pay his mortgage, utilities and food so he has been doing handyman jobs. He is in the high risk group so even now that he is starting to get work again he’s cautious about it. I arrived at his house to find out his power is well past due and about to be shut off....again. It was off for a while this summer and he had no ac. He also currently has no trash services. He called me today because his car is now not working. At this point he’s so far behind he feels completely hopeless. So I got on the phone with his utilities companies today and have an application for federal assistance. We will also help him work with DES and SSI. Our goal is to get his water turned back on asap. We will apply for MesaCAN federal assistance, talk to churches and St. Vincent de Paul and collect from charitable neighbors to reach the $1140. 20 past due bill plus the $100 reactivation fee. Thank you all for your help!
