Midway through Jacobs’s eleventh grade year at Cabrillo High school he discovered his passion while attending a computer class. Jacob excelled right away. He was asked to help out as a teacher’s aid. During this time he decided he wanted a career working with computers. Jacob was also working part time washing dishes at Jalama Beach Café. He enjoyed making money but was determined to follow his passion. He started talking to Navy recruiters about wanting to serve his Country, pursue a career in Computer Science, audio engineering and eventually produce music. He immediately doubled up on his high school classes while continuing to wash dishes. He found out he could enlist three months prior to his eighteenth birthday. On his days off Jacob would go work out with a recruiter and study for the ASVAB test. Jacob worked hard and eventually completed high school a semester early.
We took him to the doctor for a routine physical and get a clean bill of health to join the Navy. His Doctor was concerned about his abnormal neck size. He was sent to a specialist who took fifteen biopsies. They all came back positive for cancer. On January 28th, 2015 Jacob had his first surgery removing his thyroid and more than fifty lymph nodes from the right side of his neck. On March 4th, 2015 he completed his second surgery removing over fifty lymph nodes from the left side of his neck. Jacobs been off work recovering from his surgeries and adjusting to the new medication he has to take the rest of his life. He started radioactive iodine treatments in May of 2015. In May 2016 we received the results of his treatments. It has spread to his chest area and Jacob will need to go to UCLA cancer hospital. The surgeons will have to separate his ribs, move his clavicle and cut his sternum in order to get to and remove the cancer. We are looking at a 2 to 3 week stay at UCLA, with many follow up therapy and treatment appointments as well.
Jacob spends his days working part time at Vons Starbucks, watching TV, playing video games, walking our dogs and creating music. He has volunteered in the community supporting many organizations such as the Employee Development Association, AYSO, Dwayne Fuggs Memorial Committee, Queen Candidate BBQ ,he also volunteers for The Lompoc Trash Mob. He has participated in IBEW 1245 Lompoc unit BBQ for make a difference day. He’s also a participant in Relay for Life.
Our family is asking if you could please donate to help cover the expenses of gas, food and lodging so we could be with Jacob during this stressful time
Your support will help us to focus on our son’s health.
Thank you so much
