To our dear family and friends-
As many of you are aware, my sister Nikki (47) was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3 Ovarian Cancer in May. As you can imagine, our lives were turned upside down in an instant. With no choice or time to absorb the shock, she hit the ground running. Within days of diagnosis, she started 9 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy. She had major surgery in July, and is currently undergoing another 9 week round of chemo. Due to low platelet counts, she needed a transfusion, which has prolonged chemo. She is scheduled for another surgery in November 2, and wait for it…..36-48 weeks of maintenance chemo every 3 weeks which will last through the better part of next year.
Needless to say, her life as a working mother of 2, Lily (10) and Amelia (6), came to a halt overnight. Her amazingly devoted and hardworking husband, Ken, has been there for her through everything day and night, and still manages to be a present and awesome father and maintain his role at work without complaint. However, a dual income family down to a single income with endless medical bills is causing tremendous stress, so I am reaching out to you on their behalf.
Many of you have done so much already to help. The out-pouring of love and support, meals, phone calls and emails has been nothing short of amazing. Our family is moved beyond words. It’s times like these when you truly feel loved.
Nikki and Ken have managed so far financially, but were recently denied insurance on her upcoming surgery which is estimated to be a small fortune. They are trying to appeal, but still have not heard back. We don’t want to forgo the surgery or even postpone it, as it seems like the best option for Nikki to beat this. They are trying to figure it out, but it’s an enormous cost to bare. They still have a long road ahead, as she will not be able to return to work for some time.
I have set up a www.gofundme.com account to help raise funds for the upcoming surgery in November and ease some of their financial burden. I know you can all appreciate the magnitude of the cost of fighting a life threatening illness. It’s mind boggling and overwhelming. Any amount you feel comfortable giving will help ease this additional stress on their lives so they can focus on the real fight at hand.
I am personally moved to tears by the love and friendship that surrounds us and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
