Help for Harry's amputation
Donation protected
My father-in-law Harry Driggers is the most wonderful person I've ever met! He is patient, kind and always ready to lend an ear if someone needs to talk. A proud Navy Veteran who served during Vietnam, he's always been a hard worker. Before the emergency, he was working as security in the DCH emergency room in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Last week on May 23rd Harry was at work and began having pain in his lower right leg. The sweet doctors and nurses he works with tried to find a pulse, but were having problems locating one. It was decided he had a blood clot in his leg and he was admitted for emergency surgery. After the surgery we were hopeful that the blood clot had been cleared and that his blood flow would be returned to normal. Color to his lower leg returned and it had a pulse, but after a 24 hour period it was clear that the surgery had not been a success, and he was told that his leg would have to be amputated. I cannot begin to tell you the amount of fear, we as his family felt. We knew at that moment his life would never be the same. Harry was a brave hero and kept his composure before, during & after the surgery.
Now the hard part begins.
Harry will be in a rehabilitation facility for the next month learning to do all the things people with two legs take for granted. For example: getting out of a bed, getting into a bed, getting to a bathroom, getting in and out of a shower, how to put on clothes, how to take off clothes. Re-learning how to do the most basic forms of living is his next step.
The money raised for Harry will go to a variety of needs. One of the most important needs is to build a ramp to make it easier to enter and exit his home. Several doors within the house need widening for easier mobility at the house. There is only one shower in the house, and this would need some major remodeling to accomodate his new routine. A new bed will need to be added, that has a better clearance for Harry to get in and out of without assistance. Future modifications to the family vehicle may also be neccessary. Also, most importantly due to this situation, Harry will no longer be able to earn an income as security for the hospital. This income change will have a profound effect on the family's most basic needs.
This kind of a surgery will take many months to recover from. Harry is a very humble person and would never want us to ask for help, but we know the costs associated with this kind of disability will require your help. Please find it in your heart to help Harry, as it is needed and will be so appreciated.
