Chanthan Y 2/15/1937-11/15/2020 Thank you everyone. My father went to be with his beloved Buddha morning of 11/15/20. Today, the world lost a light and is a little dimmer as my father passed on. In 1980, Our family fled war-torn genocide in Cambodia in hopes for a better future. To support the family of 8, my father worked as janitor, maintenance man, migrant farmer. On weekends he would volunteer as a Buddhist minister (A jah), and worked Cambodian school teacher in Stockton, CA. For 36 years, my father made the Stockton Cambodian community his life’s work. When there was no Cambodian representation or place of worship for the community for Cambodian immigrants like him in the 1980s, he and his group of friends decide to build a temple. Today, the temple is one of the largest Cambodian temples in the US, hosting thousands of worshippers and visitors every year. A man of faith- My dad presided over countless Cambodian traditional weddings and prayer, always active at the Stockton Cambodian community, always organizing many blessings and ceremonies, and so much more. He was the VP Buddhist temple until his last day. He was always creating a ray of light, he was the center of our happiness, while always honoring his beloved khmer traditions and Khmer culture. Everyone loved him. He is everyone’s (Tha) grandfather. A pillar in our community. A steward of our culture. Our family’s patriarch, Chanthan Y. Leading up his last days, my dad was also taking care of my mother who suffered a stoke 2 years ago. He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, 6 children, many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. Chanthan Y was 83 years old.
