27 miles for 27k!

As many of you already know, our lovely Mum Mary has been receiving treatment for cancer for the past two years. Up until very recently, her chemotherapy had been working well and she was due to have surgery to remove part of her liver. Unfortunately, her most recent scans in March showed that the tumours had grown and spread across the liver quite significantly, meaning that surgery is no longer an option, and that the year ahead would likely be our last together as a family. With current lockdown restrictions in place, and Mum having to shield for 12 weeks already, this very suddenly felt like no time at all.
About a week after receiving this news, we were beyond grateful when Mum was offered a chemotherapy drug which aims to manage any further growth or spread. Although this has given us some much-needed hope, we are also very aware that this drug cannot shrink the already existing tumours, and that the effectiveness of containing the cancer is around 50%- a chance we feel we are not able to take at this stage.
After spending some time doing our own research, and with the help of our lovely friend Julia, we were able to find out about a radiotherapy treatment which targets the liver directly and aims to shrink tumours. Although this can sometimes be offered on the public health system, it is not widely available, and is unfortunately not an option for our Mum at this stage. We understand and respect this decision and cannot be anything but thankful for the care and treatment she has received from the NHS over the past couple of years. However, after finding out about this treatment we were not willing to give up and felt we had no choice but to look into private options.
The cost of this treatment is £27,000 which is obviously a substantial amount, and why we have decided to try to raise some of this money by setting ourselves the 27 miles for 27k challenge! If we are lucky enough to get anywhere near this amount (or over), we would also like to donate to Macmillan Cancer Support.
It has been difficult to face the reality that although this treatment may reduce the size of the tumours, and allow for a break from chemotherapy, it is unlikely to provide a miracle cure. It can, however, allow us more time- time to spend together, to love and laugh and make memories- things I like to think we have all gained a new appreciation for over these past couple of months.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this, it means a lot.

THE CHALLENGE
27 MILES for 27K!
On Saturday 30th May, myself and a group of the most brilliant friends & family are planning to walk/run or cycle 27 miles (this is about 57,000 steps or just over a marathon!) This will be completed within our daily exercise allowance and our own homes and gardens! We are planning to start this challenge together (from afar!) as a show of unity in these isolating times, and welcome anyone to join in and share updates/photos from your own 27-mile journey! Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to find out more, Ellie x
