After speaking with Dan's care team at the hospital, the family made the difficult decision to remove him from the ventilator today.
He passed peacefully this afternoon.
All funds raised will now be going towards funeral expenses.

Thank you for your generosity and prayers.
Sarah and Katie.

2020 has definitely been a year that many of us wish we could forget. It has been a year of uncertainty, worry, frustration, and fear. Many of us believed we were nearing the end of the troubling times, but sadly the threat of COVID-19 is still a serious reality.
Nearly two and a half weeks ago, our fears became a reality when Dan tested positive for COVID-19. He was rushed to the hospital when he found himself unable to breathe. After 3 days, he was deemed stable and was allowed to return home to quarantine.
Less than 24 hours later, he was rushed back once again by ambulance after his oxygen levels began to spiral. It was discovered that he had also developed pneumonia in both lungs, which was causing great distress on both his lungs and his body. The last thing Dan wanted was to be put on a ventilator except as a last resort. His care team agreed to abide by his wishes, and he remained on the ICU watch list, which happens when a patient is identified as possibly needing to be placed on a ventilator.
To our great worry, Dan's health continued to deteriorate over this last week to the point where it was deemed necessary for him to be intubated and placed on a ventilator. This was on Tuesday morning, 11/10/2020.
He has spent the last three days sedated in the ICU with the highest oxygen levels.
Since then, he has seen significant progress and the prognosis is getting better and better with each day. He has stopped taking blood pressure medication as he has been able to maintain a good level on his own, his oxygen requirements have improved, and they have even pulled him out of the sedation for a few hours each day, though he remains intubated.
While we continue to pray for his full recovery, we now see the bigger picture of what that recovery is going to look like for him, and it will be a rough road. Unfortunately, Dan has used all 80 hours of paid COVID leave from work. His amazing coworkers have donated some of their saved PTO hours to him so that he can receive a little more pay.
Still, the hospital bills are growing, and he will eventually require cardiac therapy as well as spend time with the TCU (Transitional Care Unit) before he will be able to return home.
If you can excuse the fact that he is a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan...any help will be greatly appreciated as the family is only able to assist so much given the circumstances.
Dan has always been there for his family and friends, and is usually the last person to ask for help. However, in a situation like this, anything that anyone would be willing to donate would be greatly appreciated and received with the greatest thanks from his family.
