Hello my name is Bryann Virgen, and this is my little brother (Henry Bruce Alvarado). My brother is only four years old and has had a rough childhood. When he started school he was only 3 years old, teachers and doctors believed he had autism (ADS) because he wouldn’t talk much and wasn’t doing the same things other kids would, so Bruce has been receiving special learning in order for him to be in the right level of “normal kids”. We didn’t think much of it because he is like the smartest kid to us. Literally he can name you every dinosaur there is. On August my little brother was getting really high temperatures at night with really warm palms and sweats to the point where he took off his shirt and uncovered his blanket. My mom and his dad thought he was just a hot baby and just didn’t like anything on him at night while he sleeps. During the day my little brother was like any other 4 year old kid would do and that is play with his thousands of dinosaurs toys that he has and watch YouTube of other kids playing dinosaurs; which I thought was pretty funny because he already has those toys and also play with his cars outside so we as a family thought he was fine because has so much energy that didn’t think much of the high temp at night but these high temps was consistent and were every night. One night my brother had a high temp of I believe it was 104.5 and my mom didn’t think it was normal so she made an appointment with his p.c.p (primary care physician) to see him. My mom demanded c.b.c (complete blood count) while getting his blood drawn just to see if his blood levels were right. Sure enough we get a phone call from his doctor that very night and told my mom that Bruce needed to go back to the hospital immediately because his level of white blood cells were super low. We rushed to him back to the hospital and waited in the ER. The main doctor that was at Kaiser that night just thought that it might have been A bacteria causing his levels to be low so they wanted to get another blood draw and retest his blood one more time with the c.b.c and other test. We waited about an hour or two and the doctor came back stating Bruce had to be admitted that same night and wouldn’t tell us why she was just stating he needs to be admitted and needed to see another doctor so we can get some answers. We were already thinking the worse and thought it’s not just a bacteria. Bruce got admitted to the hospital that night and that very morning they were going to take out fluids from his spine bone marrow to determine if Bruce has leukemia cancer or not and they can proceed what Bruce actually had. On August 8, 2019 my mom and his dad received the worse news anyone can possibly get, a hematology Doctor told us Bruce has been diagnose with (Pre B cell ALL leukemia cancer) and needed to get chemo started right away. Our heart were literally dropped and thinking the worse of the worse and since then it has been hard on all of us. Bruce gets chemo every Friday and it is going to be a long term treatment doctor says it will take at least three years for his treatment. My mom had to leave her job to be with my little brother and his dad “Henry” was out of work for 2 months without any of them having hours for being out work. We as a family have been struggling because not even the government or programs want to help us out for some odd reason. I can only help so much because I don’t make as much as my mom does and it hurts me so much because I want to give her everything that I have.
