My name is Ben Minchew. I am 28 years old and I am in critical condition in the emergency trauma unit at Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, TN.
On November 10th I was in an accident where I lost control and was ejected from the van I was driving. The van then rolled over me, crushing my spine, shoulder, ribs and face. I have a punctured lung and require a breathing tube. My right ear could not be saved. On November 11th I received surgery on my spine that proved unsuccessful and has left me paralyzed from the waist down.
While my condition has stabilized some, in the coming weeks, months, and possibly years I will go through extensive reconstructive surgeries and rehabilitation. But for now I will remain in the trauma unit until my body stabilizes enough that I can be moved to the ICU.
My family and I ask for prayers more than anything. But we also request any small financial help you may be able to provide. What we are asking at this time is only a fraction of what we will eventually need. We expect that as we know more about medical expenses and care provisions that our need will greatly rise.
Also, my parents live in Chattanooga, TN and will need help with travel and preparation expenses for when I hope to return home. They are only allowed to see me for one hour total each day. They also have to split that hour between the two of them. Vanderbilt only allows 1 visitor at a time. Since I will be here for an extended period of time, my mother is asking for a temporary transfer to one of the stores in the Nashville area and my dad will visit on the weekends. Several have graciously offered a place for them to stay and we are so thankful for their hospitality.
I have a very long road before me. Please continue to pray and encourage my family.
