Nate Gives Back to BC Children's

Nathan is now a happy 2-year-old boy with lots of energy and smiles to go with it, but when he was first born he had a difficult start. At just 3 days old Nathan suffered multiple seizures because of a rare hypoglycaemic issue that his parents were unaware of. His parents knew something wasn't right and took Nathan to emergency where it was discovered that his blood sugar levels were undetectable. It was then that Nathan was rushed to BC Women's Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU). Doctor's there told Nathan's parents that they had saved his life that day.

Nathan ended up spending 29 days in NICU. Numerous things were discovered in that time, more than anyone would have guessed. An MRI revealed a large section of Nathan's brain was damaged due to the low blood sugar levels and multiple seizures. This presented concerns for vision issues and developmental delays. A small hole in his heart was also discovered as well as a large tumor in his right lung. Nathan's parents were introduced to pretty much every department at BC Children's Hospital during his month long stay and was given the nickname "Rare Bear" for having so many rare things occurring.

On his 2-month birthday Nathan under went a 4.5hr lung surgery, by Dr. Butterworth and her team, to have his tumor removed. The surgery was successful although doctors were not familiar with the tumor that was removed and further testing needed to be done. It turned out to be a F.L.I.T tumor, extremely rare and he's about the 10th kid in Canada to have one discovered. Thankfully the tumor was cancer free! Nathan was also admitted at 6 months for severe feeding issues.

Nathan continues to be followed by several doctors at BC Children's Hospital and his progress has been better than we expected! Nathan and his family will never forget the amazing treatment they have received from BC Children's Hospital and all the people that work there and want to give back! Nathan will make his 3rd appearance this year at Global's Miracle Weekend Telethon, June 4 & 5, 2016. We are raising money to be donated at this years Telethon!

At Nathan's 2nd birthday party this past April, friends & family were asked to give donations instead of gifts this year and he was able to collect over $600!! We are splitting that with another organization that has benefited Nathan but we are looking to raise more and all funds raised on this GoFundMe page will be given to BC Children's Hospital!

Thanks to everyone for their on going support and thanks to BC Children's Hospital for being amazing!!
