Voluntary Teaching in Guyana
250 Million Children worldwide cannot read or write...
My name is Rob Vassie and I am currently working as a PE and Geography teacher at Pent Valley School in Folkestone.
I am making my way to the West Indies this summer for a month to improve the standard of teaching in Lethem, Guyana which borders Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil. I will be volunteering in an extremely deprived and lower economically developed country compared to the classrooms and communities of Kent and England.
Sadly, the school I work in is being closed by KCC this August and therefore, myself and all my colleagues are being made redundant. This experience will not only restore my faith in teaching and education, make me more employable for future positions but it will help so many other teachers and students that do not have access to a quality education in some of the developing areas in the world to improve how they learn and teach.
I am aiming to raise £2500 to allow me attend and complete this trip. Flights, accommodation, all transport, resources, training and excursions are all included in this total. Any extra money will be put into erecting a classroom area or basketball hoop/court area for the people to use or however the communities could best use the excess.
