Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is ask for help!
Kent Lewis woke one morning to severe pain and was unable to stand on his own. He was admitted to the hospital in Pierre, SD with CK levels peaking at 197K and no identifiable cause for the muscle deterioration that was happening to his body. Within a week, and with determination, he was able to be released to watch his daughter graduate high school. By Monday he was back in the hospital. Kent is unable to be without the intravenous fluids that help to keep the CK levels in his blood from causing irreversible liver and kidney damage, and potential failure. He has since been moved to Sioux Falls and is receiving advanced treatment and diagnostics - to include muscle biopsy, CDC consultation, and opinions from the Mayo clinic and other experts across multiple states. He can’t get off the IV! It is 3 weeks later with no cause identified, and no path ahead for recuperation. He and his wife, Misti, are tied to the hospital bed. Unable to work and no idea when this will end. When he is finally released, after suffering massive muscle loss, he will have a long road to recovery!
While I have supported many causes and fundraisers in the past – I have never been so personally affected by the suffering that has come from someone you love being bed ridden, critically ill, and unable to identify a source. While there may not be much we can do to help find the cure – maybe friends, family and community support can make a difference and help to ease some of the financial stress and allow them to focus on healing.
Anything contributed to help my brother and his family will go to hospital bills, lost pay and future medical needs resulting, I pray soon, from determination and treatment of cause.
Thank you for your support and will keep you posted on Kent’s progress!
