I am a musician from Roanoke, Virginia that has been playing music for the last 47 years. I have been extremely fortunate to have been influenced by many incredibly talented people over the years but one individual stands heads and tails above the rest. My best friend and mentor, Brent Clinevell, has done so much to influence the music scene in Virginia and throughout the Carolinas through his years in the music business with such regional powerhouse bands as Razzmatazz, Jessie Bolt, Diamonds, and The Kings. I first saw him perform in 1976 and was never the same after that fateful night. Back in the day, I tell people Brent was the closest thing I ever saw to Elvis Presley with his total command of entertaining, singing, pacing, and fronting every band he was ever in. He was the ultimate performer and knew exactly how to work a crowd into a frenzy each and every night. His job was never done until he had left everything he had on the stage. When I was lucky enough to play guitar in Razz back in 1979 & 1980, I remember him having food poisoning before a gig we had at Boardwalk Billy’s in Charlotte, NC. He was throwing up all day on the way to the club and was white as a ghost before we went on stage that night. He was throwing up between songs and on the breaks but, at the end of the show, he did a “Nestea Plunge” onto the stage floor when we hit the last note and the lights went to black. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since. He was always the consummate professional that lived by the motto “the show must go on”...Brent also was instrumental in bringing karaoke to the forefront in the SW Virginia area in the 90’s when he finished touring with Diamonds. Many of you will remember his work on Wednesday nights at Cheers in Roanoke in the 90’s. Brent has recently fallen on hard times as he is unable to perform any longer and is having trouble paying his bills and is currently looking for a place to live. He has been on disability for several years now and really needs your help with paying his bills and getting his feet back on the ground. If you ever saw Brent perform with any of the bands I’ve mentioned or enjoyed his karaoke work all over SW Virginia, please give what you can to help my brother out. He has been through two heart attacks, two bypass surgeries, survived Stage 4 throat cancer, endured five mini-stokes, and made it through carotid artery bypass surgery as well. He has always been a survivor but is in serious need of help from the musical family that he has dedicated his life to entertaining. Please give what you can and assist this giant of the regional music scene in his time of need. He will sincerely appreciate anything you can do to help him out.
