In September 2019, my husband asked me for a divorce after less than a year of our marriage. I was devastated emotionally, but now I am also crushed legally and financially as I try to escape this situation.

I picked up a lawyer who has been incredibly helpful during this process, but my ex appears to have no intention of allowing us to come to a fair and equal resolution.

I had taken on a substantial amount of debt, paying for the wedding entirely by myself, improvements for his home, a $5,000 down payment on a car for him after he got into a serious accident, vet bills for his dog, and more. His portion of my debt totals $30k.

I just wanted to get this thing over with, but my ex has dragged this out for over a year now. With the interest I am paying on his debts that are in my name, I can no longer afford to pay my lawyer for the next legal steps.

I am stuck in limbo, facing bankruptcy as a result. I am scared about how to survive this situation. I have had to allocate some of my time and resources to my loving mother, as she was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer in January. I was furloughed for months due to the pandemic which completely drained my only emergency funds. I don’t know what else to do, except ask my friends for help.
