Crossfit Games Masters Participant

My name is Sandy,; I'm a 61 yr old Nurse and Marketing Liaison by profession.  I am currently attempting to raise funds to participate in the 2016 Crossfit Games in Carson, California in July. This event is the "Olympics" of Crossfit and represents the "Fittest in the World" athletes worldwide. I placed 14th in the world in the Masters Women > 60 yr old class. While the majority of competitors are young athletes with years of organized sports or even Crossfit experience, and several sponsorships, my story is quite the opposite.

Growing up, my parents strongly encouraged participation in sports believing this was essential to development of mind, body and spirit. As such, I became a competitive swimmer from 8-22 yrs old.  As I prepared for life in the real world, I entered Nursing school, completed my Masters degrees and achieved success in a demanding career as a Critical Care Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in this Jacksonville community.  For years, the occasional trip to the gym to work out convinced me that I was still the physically fit athlete I used to be "back in the day".

Years passed (actually about 40 of them) and one day a dear friend encouraged me to "get a hobby" besides work.  I figured I could increase my gym skills by working out with a personal trainer.  Enter, Brooke Haas, (unknown to me at the time) a Regional Crossfit athlete  (whatever that was).  Despite my delusion about being physically fit, Brooke would tell you that I was unable to do even 1 push-up and had horrible squat mechanics and could really only  swim!

Over the the course of 2 yrs in Crossfit, Brooke patiently & gently realized my full potential as an athlete. By utilizing her exceptional knowledge and skills, she coached me to the pinnacle of this athletic competition known as the Crossfit Games.

At age 61, this has been a phenomenal journey to reach a destination I never thought possible in myself as an athlete. The struggle to "leave ego at the door", force my brain to function at 0500, deadlift twice my body weight and fly on rings was real and humbling on a daily basis.  Fortunately, I had the full support of my coach, gym mates and other Crossfit gyms in Jacksonville; they  encouraged me to become a Games athlete. The only thing I had to do was believe in myself and my abilities.

My current goal is to raise $4300 to assist me in paying for travel, accommodations, and Games fees in order to pursue this dream of competing in the Crossfit Games. Much like expecting my body to run in freezing or humid conditions, this too is a difficult thing for me to ask. However, I am aware that  I need to rely to some extend,  on the support of those who understand the financial reality that comes with competing in high level sports.
As a Master Women competitor, I do not have the luxury of acquiring  sponsors to provide financial support for the Games. That said, I have been an integral part of the Jax Beach community for 40 years. I intend to make the City of Jacksonville and the Beaches proud of my participation in the 2016 Crossfit Games.

Thank you so much in advance for your support and donations; I humbly appreciate your help and support.
