Nick Hines is a loving husband, father, family member, and friend. Nick is also facing the challenges of a debilitating disease known as A.L.S. Many have heard of this disease due to the heroic efforts of Pete Frates who started the ice bucket challenge. Unfortunately Nick knew all to well about this disease because many years ago he lost two brothers to this horrible disease. Currently there is no cure and this disease has caused more pain than any one family should have to endure. About 18 months ago Nick developed weakness in one of his feet which caused a few minor stumbles. This weakness was first believed to be related to a spinal condition, Over the next several months the weakness spread, and the arduous testing began. In January of 2016 Nick was diagnosed with A.L.S. Nick has undergone extensive testing and has been found to have the familial gene to A.L.S and has courageously agreed to participate in research studies at Mass General Hospital in Boston to help find a cure. Nick loves and believes in science and in fact is a retired Science Teacher in the Hudson, New Hampshire School System where he taught for 36 years. Despite his illness he continues to teach Science part time at Manchester Community College. Nick continues to keep a positive outlook and is a true inspiration to all who know and love him. The challenges however are many, and the mounting expenses associated with this disease are causing a financial hardship for this amazing family. Nicks home needs renovations to make it handicapped accessible and an area in the basement is currently under construction including a handicapped bathroom. Medical equipment and adaptive equipment are needed to maintain mobility and independence, not to mention the numerous medications and copays needed for treatment. Nick is a very proud man who has worked hard his entire life. Nick would do anything for anyone in need especially his friends and family and now it is our turn to help him and his family in their greatest time of need.
