March 26th started as a normal day for our friend Emily, an amazing mom to Logan and Alexis and an elementary school principal in New Lenox. Unexpectedly that morning, her daughter Alexis had a long-duration seizure, resulting in a rush to the emergency room.
From that day, Alexis began the fight for her life to stabilize and begin recovery from her seizure. She spent over seven weeks in Lurie's Children's Hospital on their PICU floor and made a miraculous recovery to begin rehab at Shirley Ryan in Chicago. While we are so thankful that Alexis healed enough to go to rehab, the traumatic event has caused some intense setbacks in Alexis' independence and functioning. The seizures and extended hospital stay severely impacted her overall core strength and ability to use her hands and arms as she had before. This means that Alexis needs even more support and modifications at home.

Our goal is to allow Emily to stay focused on this extended healing process while beginning to modify areas in her home for Alexis' new needs. The first goal is to modify her bathroom. Alexis now requires a roll-in shower and special modifications, including a wheelchair lift and a specialized bath chair. In addition, we would also like to include funds for more necessary rehab and therapies that insurance won't cover.
Alexis is thankfully now home and has a very long road ahead of her, and we are so thankful for your support on her journey!
