Trail 2 Recovery: A Quest for Solace and Growth

Dear Supporters,

My name is Michael Firmstone, and I have been battling complex mental health challenges since I was just 7 years old. After a lifetime of struggling with addiction and feeling unsupported by mental health services, I reached a breaking point last year when I attempted to take my own life. Thankfully, I survived, and this life-changing event made me realise the need for better mental health support.

I have since embarked on a transformative journey, turning my life around, and finding hope through adventure and education. I’ve completed numerous marathons and ultra-marathons, seeking solace on the trails. Now, I am on the verge of completing my MSc in Psychology, dedicating 6-8 hours per week as a qualified volunteer for SHOUT, supporting those in immediate crisis.

Michael hasn’t been able to shake the allure of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), a 2,600-mile stretch of wilderness that beckoned to the adventurer and aspiring therapist within them. More than just a hike, this is a journey with a mission: to raise awareness about mental health, raise much funds required in the field and as part of their own recovery. Excited but realistic, I knew this wasn't a quest I could undertake alone. The endeavor requires gear, supplies, and the sort of visibility that could turn a personal journey into a collective awakening about mental health. In short, I need sponsors. So here I begin with courage and a marketing pitch, seeking donors that align with the values of my mission, to help, heal and inspire. All extra money raised will be donated to SHOUT a text volunteer service supporting those in crisis.

In exchange for sponsors, I will exchange social media posts and a series of blog updates on "HealingJourneys," detailing the hike and mental health insights. Energised by my breakthrough, I have already started rigorous training. Runs turned into long-distance hikes; gym workouts became targeted exercise regimens. These activities also dove deeper into my own mental health studies, aiming to merge not only with academic knowledge, but with profound personal lessons I know the trail can offer. Michael seeks further healing in the raw, unfiltered embrace of nature. Every mile conquered is a step further away from my past struggles, yet a step closer to understanding the complexities of human psychology—a perfect blend of personal and academic development.

On completion of the trail after months of hiking, I hope to find further felt transformation. Having not only survived 2600 miles in the wilderness (camping often in the wild and alone), but thriving - turning my personal journey into a public narrative of hope, resilience, and awareness. With plans to become a certified therapist, I hope to find myself armed with a rich tapestry of experiences that textbooks couldn't provide, but the PCT can — priceless knowledge for the future therapist in the making within me. And so, in sharing one person's adventures, I hope a larger community can find inspiration for themselves, and for all.

All additional proceeds raised during the epic expedition will go towards SHOUT mental health services, for whom I give 4-8 hours per week helping those in crisis, campaigning furiously as I take on 2,600 miles from Mexico to Canada.

Here’s a approximate breakdown of the investment needed for this endeavor:

Gear: £3000
Food: £2900
Travel: £1800
Accommodation: £700
Mobile Phone Plan: £230
Miscellaneous: £200
Self-Care: £200

Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those struggling with mental health challenges. Your support will not only help me complete this remarkable journey but will also contribute to the mental health support services that are urgently needed.

Thank you for being a part of this life-changing mission and helping us create a world where mental health is a priority, and support is available for everyone in need.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Michael Firmstone
