Daryl Rodgers has MS and needs a new powerchair because his old one is breaking.
Medicare allows a new chair every 5 years. We have worked to be frugle and have kept this chair running for 9 years. We've routinely replaced bolts, re-done knee pads, had 'the shop' repair electrical breakdowns, and more. But now its breakdowns are becoming unrepairable!
This is a special chair. It reclines and stands up. The standing feature is the vital function he needs to get his weight off of his seat and to help him to do other 'activities of daily living' (the medical terminology for survive through the day!). Through the day he very frequently changes position of the chair to When he is in a chair that doesn't do this, his pain level rises to the point that he looses all ability to concentrate on anything else except the pain levels. He just about goes insane.
Here's the rub...his medicare insurance doesn't cover the standing feature, and they only allow (i.e. will pay for) a very small portion of the chair's cost. (They don't appreciate that we've saved the cost of an entire chair by keeping this one alive twice as long as they calculate chairs should last.) [As we get closer to the chair purchase, I'll update the dollar amount on the campaign.]
We're setting up this funding to get help with getting the chair. What ever you can contribute will help and be deeply appreciated.
