My son Francisco is 23 years old. He was recently diagnosed with a rare movement disorder called Ataxia Spinocerebellar types 3 &10 and Dystonia his case is so rare in the medical field because most people get one movement disorder but in his case he has 3. He was a healthy kid he had no symptoms of this disease growing up. He loved doing murals and graffiti art with a youth program in the SF mission district , he was a young man who was just starting to live his life. Around 15yrs old he started to have falls where his leg would just give out , we thought it was due to an accident .He was 8yrs old riding his bike and was hit by a car so the doctors thought it was due to his accident. Over the time he started falling,losing his balance, he started lose weight and he even looked drunk. That’s when everyone turned their back on him our own family would say he was on heavy drugs and a lot of his friends wouldn’t even call him anymore. His toes started curling up, his hand twisting and the on-site of the disease took over his body basically overnight it seemed. He started becoming non mobile, his speech was getting affected where he couldn’t even speak anymore and started having trouble swallowing. The doctors in the Bay Area did some limited genetic testing but due to the type of insurance we have they could not come up with a conclusion so in the meantime my son was getting more crippling and thats when we brought him to NYC and the Doctors ran a specific genetic test. We finally had a name of what the disease my son had but even with that the doctors never seen a case like Francisco’s. This has been a nightmare for me and my family especially for him because everyone gave up on him and he was even giving up as well. As a mother it broke my heart because I couldn’t protect my baby and all I could do is PRAY. Francisco was a fan of China Mac and my friends reached out to MAC and came to see us and welcomed him with no hesitation. Mac brought his story to light and gave him hope and brought Poop’s smile back. I am a single mother that has been raising my 3 children with the help of my mom. I can’t work anymore because Francisco needs around the clock care. We have been battling the whole health care system trying to get him the proper medical equipment and services. We are facing a lot but no matter we don’t give up for him and we will continue to FIGHT 4 Francisco.
