We've Created a Monster...

Donation protected
We are Catelin Turman and Alexander Beisel, and we have created a monster. Not a zombie-fied abomination, but an academic monster that requires a trip abroad.

Alex and I are Graduate Teaching Fellows at Radford University, seeking our Master's in English. Recently, I took a class with Dr. Erin Webster-Garrett on British Romanticism.  This class focused on writing a capstone paper for the Summer of 1816 : Creativity and Turmoil conference at the University of Sheffield, England.  In my paper, I illustrate a connection between Jane Austen's Emma and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's most notorious monster story, Frankenstein.  However, as a first semester graduate student, I lacked confidence in myself and in my writing; consequently, I chose not to submit my paper to the conference in England.

Though Catelin felt she was inadequate as a writer and scholar, I disagreed.  I asked for a copy of her paper to read and (clandestinely)  sent it off to the conference, having no doubt she'd be accepted.  She was.  And so, I called her at 8 am (using my best English accent) to inform her that she'd been invited to read her work in the UK.  She promptly broke down in a mixture of tears, anger, and anticipation of seeing Jane Austen's homeland.

Even though Alex sneakily stole my paper and submitted it to the conference, I'm beyond grateful he did; it's been a dream of mine to go to England since I was thirteen years old.  I’ve been asked to share my scholarship on the authors who have helped shape me into the writer, scholar, and woman I am today.  Additionally, the trip would be incomplete without my teaching partner and academic comrade who covertly facilitated this once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

And here's the monster: we unfortunately didn't receive funding for the trip. The conference is from June 24th-June 27th of this year.  We estimate that our trip will cost approximately $3500, broken down as follows:

    Two Round Trip Tickets: $2335
    Lodging: $700 ($100/Day for 7 Days)
    Train/Car Transportation: $250
    Food: $140 ($20/Day)
    Conference Fee: $75

We know we’re asking a lot from you, but any donation, however small, is greatly appreciated.  With your help, Catelin can put a capstone on her scholarship, advance to the next level of academic professionalism, and (most importantly) see the foundation of her truest passions in the land of  Elizabeth and Victoria.
