What will happen to the schooling of the children in Mombasa's Shauri Yako slum?

The Milele Elimu Centre is a day school in Mombasa, Kenya, with primary school classes in grades 1-8 and a kindergarten. The school was opened in 2013 by Nadja Kaufmann and her husband Mark Kelian Tipatet. From the very beginning, the mission was to provide basic education for children from poor backgrounds, as well as to encourage their creativity, social contacts and support for their future educational or professional development. We contribute to this goal not only with classical education but also with care and leisure activities.

The approximately 300 school children of the Milele Elimu Centre are once again confronted with completely different realities than here in the West.  With the daily increase of the number of COVID-19 cases and the lack of state support, poverty and thus violence on Kenya's streets is also constantly rising. Most people in Kenya live from hand to mouth anyway, which is why there are no financial cushions. There is no plan B, no strategy and great uncertainty determines everyday life – including the fear of what comes after the crisis.

"The school has played a big role by providing us with necessary books, which have done a lot by making me and other pupils pass our K.C.P.E exams." - Lena Kilonzi, 14 years old, MEC student

Due to the regulations imposed by the Kenyan government due to COVID-19 pandemic, many families have no income at all. Life in Mombasa’s Shauri Yako slum was hard and built upon an unstable foundation even before the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore misery and poverty experienced by these families have been catapulted the next level.  Since the Kenyan government has decided that all schools may not reopen until 2021, children spend more time on the streets.

Our main concern is to assist the poorest families during this difficult situation. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been sending food parcels to our families periodically while the schools are closed, keeping our staff busy, visiting and supporting the families regularly, and making sure that the welfare of our children are upheld.

«The times when my family was in a deep end and couldn´t afford my fees Milele stood up for me until my last year. Until today milele still exists in my life despite leaving to high school.» - Hope Mkamburi, 16 years old, former MEC student

We are eagerly waiting for the reopening of our school, as there are many challenges to be overcome. The conditions under which the government will allow reopeninf of schools next year are strict and can only be met with further financial support.

We are counting on your help so that we can keep our teachers in employment and that they can support our children and their families during this time by visiting their homes and providing them with food packages. We are thankful for every little support to help us to reopen the doors of our school in 2021 in order to continue to offer our children the opportunity for an education.
