Hi everyone. So grateful to be alive. In a ton of pain but grateful. Last Wednesday around midnight my sister and I were hit head on by a drunk driver in East Chicago, Indiana. We were the third car in a 3 car accident where all 3 cars were totaled. All of her air bags deployed, the front, the side and the bottom. Even though there were no passengers in the back seat, those air bags deployed also. The deployment of the air bags caused major bruising, severe pain, and scarring on the skin. The doors were stuck momentarily but we were able to get out. And I’m so grateful that we’re both still alive, painfully moving and mentally exhausted. We’re bruised and banged up pretty badly from the impact. The trauma of this accident has impacted all of our lives. We were transported by ambulance to St. Catherine’s in East Chicago where Akili received stitches for a laceration in her right hand. She is a classically trained violinist who graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy (Arts Boarding School). I unfortunately have a broken and dislocated left wrist. My forearm, wrist and fingers are in a cast and I’m in a ton of pain nonstop. The ER doc and orthopedic specialist suggested surgery was the best option but I am now getting the run around from the insurance companies for a surgery that was scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday). I’m very anxious, heartbroken, devastated. I’ve been playing piano for 20 years. I have made so many personal sacrifices and invested so much time and energy to be able to stabilize myself as a full time artist and musician. I’m meeting with a few other doctors and surgeons this week to explore my options. In the meantime, my parents have become full time care takers due to the nature of our injuries. Neither one of us can work at the moment. I will be in recovery for at least 2 months after I have surgery. I love what I do that’s why I chose to do it. This fund is to ensure some extra cushion for me and my family for the days ahead to cover food, gas, living expenses, medical expenses and legal fees.
