Sophia Killingbeck medical costs

Sophia Killingbeck is a sweet, fiesty, smart and beautiful 4 year old. She became very ill one week ago and in a matter of days that fiesty child was unresponsive, completely confined to her bed, unable to walk and cried for hours.  She was taken to Detroit Children's Hospital, where for five days a team of doctors worked around the clock to diagnose this sweet baby.  Sophia was in MRI for 3 hours on Tuesday 5/17 where they evaluated her brain and spine both with and without contrast.  The Diagnosis was clear and confirmed by Radiology, Neurology, PICU, etc.  Sopia has Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM).  ADEM is an autoimmune condition whereby her immune system reacted against her brain and spinal cord.  The fevers, evlevated white blood cell count, "leg" pain, and neurological episodes are all explained by the swelling (inflammation) of the white matter in her brain and spinal cord.   However, Sophia is in the right place, the Doctors have treated multiple cases of this extremely rare disorder.  Based on her MRI and a very large team of Doctors, they all believe this is an acute case and not chronic.  They are treating her with very powerful and agressive steroids.  The recovery is long and may not be linear.  She will be in ICU for one more day and then hopefully they can move her to the Neurology floor at Children's.  Her team of Doctors can make no guarantees, but optimistically expect her to "recover".  Speech therapy, PT will be part of her future.
