This fundraiser is being organized by friends to help David R. - a resident of Truckee, CA.
David has been through tremendous life challenges over the past decade, including home foreclosure, the debilitating aftereffects of a major brain surgery in 2019, the breakup of his marriage, the severe illness of one of his children (requiring much of David’s time/attention for several years), periods of near-homelessness during which he and his family needed to relocate several times, an extended hospitalization (and resulting job loss) in 2024, and ongoing financial challenges including a bankruptcy and the recent loss of his car.
David has remained as positive as possible in the face of these very difficult circumstances and has always done his best to support his family – despite not being in good health for many years. The real estate slowdown and higher interest rates have made it infeasible for him to continue his career in mortgage lending, so he has been working multiple lower-paying jobs to make ends meet. However, over the past 6 months, his medical conditions have worsened to the point that it is not currently possible for him to work long hours.
David’s doctors agree that he should not be working full-time; he is currently navigating through the process of applying for early Social Security (he will turn 62 in October) and disability benefits. If these benefits are approved, he will be able to sustain himself with a part-time job while he focuses on getting well. But the approval process could take six months or longer, leaving him with urgent financial needs until he gets some relief.
David’s lifestyle is not exorbitant. He is currently living alone in modest rental housing (a garage apartment) in Truckee, California (he relocated to his childhood hometown a couple of years ago). He also pays rent on a storage unit in southern California, which he primarily has to make sure his kids’ remaining childhood mementos are not lost. In order to maintain his employability, he hopes to secure a reliable car as soon as possible. His children are now adults and mostly self-sufficient.
Those who know him know that David is a good man. He has worked hard all of his adult life (which started early because of the loss of both of his parents when he was a teenager). He does his best to cheerfully serve his clients and employers, even at times when his own life has been difficult. As much as he hates to ask for help, he now needs our support to overcome devastating circumstances which have largely been beyond his control.
Will you please help David to get back on his feet? He would never want this request to be a burden to anyone and he will completely understand if you are not able to participate. But if each of us could chip in something, together we can help a friend who is really in need.
