The Ford Family- Help Mike!

(I have been asked to post an update from the Ford Family as of July 15, 2016)

Last year, April 2015, as Mike was entering his last quarter of 7th grade, he as in P.E. class and on the tennis court. He and another kid, much larger and much more physically fit, began to jaw back and forth about the performance of lack of it as partners. Mike was caught of guard with a sucker punch , head landing on the tennis court, and then he received a ground and pound. He could not stand or talk when We arrived 20 minutes later, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He eventually can around and was bed ridden for a couple days with a black and blue face.

Initially he rebounded and was back a school but the symptoms began to build over the next few months. Wicked neck pains, double vision, and 4 visits to the ER. Finally my retina doc took a looks and with a troubled look said go straight to the ER. Mike ended up have blood clots in his brain. Soon followed by a shunt installed in his brain to drain off and relieve the pressure.

The whole following year was one of misery. Pain after pain. Back, neck, legs. He missed 50% of 8th grade and when he when is was not working through the pain.

April 28th 2016, just over a year after the initial assault we checked into the ER for discovery. Tired of Mike living in pain. The first test, a heart echo found a massive blood clot in his heart, then another shutting down his right lung, another completely blocking his portal vain supplying 100% of the body’s nutrition to the liver. Any many others. The aggressively treated with TPA systemically, when in itself could have causes severe brain bleed, but it was caught early and stopped. Winding down off the (opiate) sedatives, when is a time of strong and scary withdraws, they had him loaded to the max with Heparin. A blood thinner. Turned out to be a bad mix. He ended up having a severe brain bleed, undetected for 10 plus hours, while in the ICU. Life has changed.

Currently, July 15th 2016, Mike is 11 weeks at PCH 7 of which was in the ICU . On May 15th he had a massive brain hemorrhage that went undetected while in the ICU for 10 hours. To relieve pressure, they removed half the skull and the blood clot. It was just reinstalled a few weeks ago. He has now a traumatic brain injury to the left frontal lobe and the future is unclear. He is able to breath on his own with a trache and get nourishment through a g-tube feeding. His limbs all move to pressure response, but not purposeful. His eyes will lock in if positioned, but he does not respond to any requests. Over time, both near and far, we will see what is the result of the very sad event.

Every day, the Ford family  is reminded by the doctors that thier son's condition is very fragile and there is a long road ahead towards recovery. Medicial bills are piling up as Michael remains in the hosptial getting the care he needs in order to stay alive. For those that know Sam, you know that she spends countless hours per day helping those around her find happiness in their life through fitness and friendship. The Ford Family continues to reach out asking for positive thoughts and prayers. If we as a community can do anything to make their lives a little less stressful, such as help with Michael's medical bills, I know they would be forever grateful! Thank you for any prayers or help you can send the Ford family's way!
