Zachary J. Brown

Hello, my name is Zachary Brown. I spend most of time hanging with friends and playing videogames, I’m a sucker for the Call of Duty games. I won’t lie, I can’t stand exercise although I probably need it. My step-father tries to force me anyway. I usually object and fight but when I get out I usually end up enjoying it. I also live with my short, worrisome, lovable Mother, an 8 year old brother that drives me past insanity, and my two dogs Matz (a hot tempered tiny Yorkipoo) and Mishka (a Siberian Husky in Florida of all places.) I’m pretty socially awkward with girls but I do have fabulous hair so I guess that makes up for something. What I lack in good looks, I make up for in Charisma.

Since the beginning of March I was having consistent nausea vomiting every morning, on and off headaches, trouble focusing in school, I lost 10 pounds and got very depressed. I was repeatedly diagnosed with stomach related problems. After symptoms continued for a month my parents decided to drive me 60 miles from my home in Ocala Florida to Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Again, we were about to be sent home with a stomach related diagnosis, luckily the attending physician decided to do an MRI on my head. Moments later they found a cancerous tumor which for the past six weeks had been blocking my spinal fluid causing my symptoms.

For most people with a brain tumor, specifically an Anaplastic Ependymoma Grade III or cancer of any sort would be emotionally shocking, and it was. However, despite my fears I’ve overcome the obstacles this diagnosis has dealt me. I’ve done my best to stay optimistic and prepare for the worst and hope for the best. When things get tough I think to myself that there are others who have it worse but still managed to power trough so why shouldn’t I? When I picture it this way it helps me to gain a more positive outlook on the situation helping with recovering physically and mentally.

During my treatment I was given so much emotional support from family, friends, doctors, nurses, social workers, physical therapists and fellow patients. Sheri a calm sweet-hearted woman who I had met at BROOKS Rehab was recovering from the side effects of radiation therapy given to her in pill form for Thyroid Cancer. The radiation pill caused symptoms similar to those from chemotherapy. Despite her suffering she still maintained a pleasant and positive attitude while providing support for me and my mother. We spent nights playing Scrabble and took a break from our cancer. She inspires me primarily because she reminds me of my Aunt Virginia who passed away due to cancer while I was at the hospital with my newly diagnosed brain cancer. With all the love and support provided I have been making successful strides in my treatment and hope anyone who reads this, may find hope from my experience and have a positive more successful recovery.

The financial burdens caused by my tumor have caused a lot of stress for my mother and stepfather. I am guessing having cancer can be pretty costly? Oddly, the challenges that come with having cancer have taught me many things about my life and helped to improve the relationship with my mom and stepdad. Normally, I’d just wake up and hop on my playstation but instead I went right to work on this Go Fund Me hoping I could help.

I now realize certain things in life have more value. I’m taking the time to write this in an attempt to help aid my mother and step-father financially. After being trapped in a hospital room with my mom for over a month I’ve noticed many improvements in our bond, in terms of patience, acceptance and care for one another. Since surgery I have thought about my mom and her struggles financially through all of this. I hope you can chip in whatever amount you can to help us through this. I can live with my cancer, I just have to accept it, but I do not wish to see my family struggle financially or emotionally anymore than they have to because of my illness. Your donation will help reduce some of the financial burden placed on my family.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. This is a serious potentially deadly illness but very treatable due to the work of charitable and government organizations supporting scientist in cancer research and those who have devoted their lives to help people like me overcome cancer, because of their hard work I will be fine. Any remaining funds from your gracious contributions will be equally distributed between local and national non-profits such as The American Cancer Society, The Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and other disability related organizations helping those less fortunate.
