My credentials: USAF Maj Ret, BA Aero Engineering, MS Systems Engineering, Neighborhood Assoc Pres, STEM teacher (15+ yrs) and STEM tutor (400+ hrs)
Purpose: After 20+ years, City managers have cut funding for rocket kits for the summer program . Currently, rocket workshops are scheduled for 14 Community Centers ... and no kits. Abq Outdoor Rec estimates at least 250 kits and motors are needed to continue the program.
Money: The money will be used to fund rocket kits and motors. Some will be reimbursed by Community Centers. Some will be donated for kids who cannot afford a kit. Some will be used for workshops throughout NM. In the past, the City budgeted for kits and motors, but reimbursements were deposited in a general fund that could not be used for new kits and motors.
Need: Funds are needed to order kits and motors for summer workshops. Kids learn about science, technology, engineering, and math through rocketry. Today, we are in a different space race - commercial. Back to the Moon and Mars Colonization are real ventures for the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians. Moon Express plans a launch to the moon in 2017. Space X is seeking certification to deliver astronauts to the ISS . Virgin Galactic plans to launch tourists into space from our own NM Space Port.
