Hello everyone,
My name is Jefferson Solano and I am a junior at Leadership Public Schools Richmond. Last summer I received a full paid scholarship to go to a NOLS course in Alaska. This experience completely change my life as I overcame challenges in the wilderness that allowed me to grow as person and develop stronger leadership skills. Thanks to my NOLS experience, I realized the importance of summer programs and how they can have a huge impact on your life. My NOLS experience encouraged me to apply for other rigorous summer programs for this summer.
I was recently accepted to a prestigious summer program at the University of Chicago. I will be attending an undergraduate level course name Natural Disasters: Science, Statistics, and Minimizing Risks. This summer course allows high school students to apply the principles of various science topics such as chemistry and physics in order to understand the nature of natural hazards as well as strategies for tackling complex scientific problems. This course is an ideal choice for me as I plan on studying STEM in college, I plan to study Astronomy and Physics.
However, my financial situation has become a barrier towards my ideal summer program. Unfortunately, my family cannot afford to pay for the tuition, dorm, nor travel expenses due to being low income in household of six. My father is the only one that occupies a job in my family and struggles to pay for our family expenses. For this reason, my family cannot afford to pay for my summer education. I will not be able to attend UChicago if I can’t come up with the money by July 15th. The hardest thing about asking for money is asking for the help itself, however, my own desire to pursue a higher education has led me to ask for your help to continue making my dreams a reality.
