On June 14, 2015 I retired from the Calgary Fire Department after 35 years of service. The thought of growing a beard was a long time coming, as this is something I could not do in my line of work. I figured after a couple months I’d be ready to get rid of the excess hair (as I was), but an opportunity arose that I could not forego.
So now, after 11 months growth, dozens of offers to be Santa, (hundreds of kids asking if I am Santa), numerous inquiries as to my living status, many litres of beard lube, and months of pestering from family and friends, I have one month to go, to my one year anniversary!
At a fundraiser on Saturday, June 18, 2016 (contact me for ticket details) I will be shaving my beard and *gasp*, moustache for “Angel with Attitude’.
Here is the story:

On November 25, 2014, Alysha Teà Oliphant tragically lost her seventeen-year battle with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Following Alysha’s passing, her family, Todd, Jeannine, Kelsi, and Sara established "Angel with Attitude", a memorial foundation in honor of Alysha and the journey through her life.
Alysha was a daughter, sister, grand-daughter, friend and hero to those who had the pleasure of knowing her. As a senior at Bishop Carroll High School, Alysha was a dedicated and passionate student. She was an ambitious young woman that had an infectious personality and an incredible smile. Even through adversity Alysha continued to shine, never allowing her condition to define who she was. With all of the physical challenges and obstacles her heart condition contributed to her every day life, she refused to allow her single ventricle heart to hold her back in participating or accomplishing whatever was important to her at that time in her life. She was very determined and gutsy in accomplishing whatever she set out to do.
To honor Alysha, the mission is to carry her captivating spirit and love of life forward, instilling her compassion, kindness, and empathy to children besieged with medical, physical and economic barriers by providing resources for a welcomed distraction to their daily challenges.
The Alysha Oliphant Memorial Foundation “Angel with Attitude” is a directive for the Oliphant Family to contribute to children who are experiencing life challenges as Alysha encountered. While honoring Alysha’s life, our wish is to make the world a brighter place, just as she did during her time here with all of us.
