If you don't know me, my name is Michael Sedita. I suffer from a rare disease called transverse myelitis . In mid-2012, I became a quadriplegic as a result--equivalent to a C6 incomplete spinal cord injury. I havemany continuing symptoms: hypotension, hypothermia, chronic (sometimes life-threatening) urinary tract infections, autonomic dysreflexia, spasticity, urination & digestion difficulty, osteoporosis, and intractable neuropathic pain. Although modern medical care has greatly improved over the last 50 years, the average life expectancy is a good 2-5 years lower than the average population.
Recently, I was interviewed by a neurologist & pain doctor for an emerging treatment for spinal cord injury: stem cell implantation. After failed trials with antidepressants, anticonvulsants, strong opioids, nerve blocks, and a spinal pain pump, this essentially the last treatment available. Currently, I consider the pain more disabling than the paralysis itself. In addition to improving pain, this treatment may improve many of the side effects of SCI and increase mobility.
The doctor--Lora Brown MD--is an expert in the field and will perform the surgery pro bono. However the acual cost of the stem cells themselves borders on $2000 and is not covered by inusrance. The initial treatment requires two treatment requires two courses, for a total of $4000.
