Hello, I’m Lara.

In March 2023, at age 38, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer called Broad Ligament Leiomyosarcoma. There are around 25 cases worldwide on record of this kind of cancer.

Following surgery we were hopeful that the cancer was all taken, however months later I experienced pain again and it was confirmed that the cancer is back throughout my abdomen and pelvis.

Because of the rare nature of my cancer, treatment isn’t formulaic. We don’t know how the cancer will respond to different treatments. Currently I’m deep in the world of combined chemotherapy for a week at a time. I have two more chemo cycles to go, before trying targeted drugs and trials through my specialist here in Adelaide. In addition I’m currently researching treatment plans abroad to try after chemo is finished. These options are expensive, but could be life-giving. All money raised will go towards further treatment.

If there is a way out there for me to be cancer-free then I need to find it. My dream is to be strong and healthy to mother my two young children, make happy memories with my family, and return to the work that I love as a New Arrivals teacher.
