A New Prosthetic Eye for Kael Dixon

Donation protected
My name is Meg Dixon from San Tan Valley AZ,  my husband Casey and I are asking for assistance for our son Kael.

Kael was diagnosed with retinoblastoma (eye cancer)just 8 days after his 4th birthday. Amazingly after 6 years he is still cancer free, but unfortunately lost his left eye.

He has not let this slow him down though. He excels at school and maintains an incredible positive attitude in all that he does. He instantly warms the hearts of all he comes in contact with. I am constantly stopped by people who know Kael who have to tell me how special he is. He has such diversity enjoying sports, science, and Cub Scouts.

Unfortunately after six years a new prosthetic is needed due to growth. The old prosthetic is starting to rotate causing irritation and pain. The irritation also causes the eye to create an excess of eye crust, that causes the eye to look horribly unnatural. Due to rotation his eye is also unable to close entirely causing dryness and more irritation. Our insurance only covered a percentage of it the first time and we are having a difficult time getting them to agree to cover any of this one. As if this wasn't difficult enough we just received notice that our insurance is going to be cancelled for our entire family. We are attempting to fight this decision.

My husband Casey is an amazing supporter and works two jobs to keep our family of seven with what we need. This of course goes beyond the cost of the basics. I am unable to work due to chronic autoimmune diseases. This is very hard for our family to reach out for help, as anyone who knows us can attest. In fact most people don't even realize how hard we work to keep our heads above water, a fact that we are proud of. We do not spend money unnecessarily. We do not drive new cars (yay no car payments). We do not have the latest electronic devices (in fact our cell phones are hand me downs). There's no credit cards, cable, or fancy restaurants either and we live at Goodwill. Our children are our world and that is where we focus our attention. It's hard to set aside pride, reveal our weaknesses, share these personal things about our family and ask for help. Sadly at this point we have exhausted all other avenues and I refuse to let my pride stand in the way of the well being of my child. So it is with heavy heart and great humbleness that I reach out and ask my friends, family, and community for help. No amount is too small, each $1 adds to a total of people who care, each share means we're important to you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for even taking the time to read this.

Before any negative comments my children are not allowed to shoot a firearm before the age of 8 AND have shown responsibility when being taught gun safety before hand. My husband's job also requires a duty weapon in which he's been trained to carry and Kael's grandfather who is a retired Mesa police officer was there for this first hands on lesson.
